Official Setup Guide

Get Started with Trezor

Welcome to the safest place for your coins. Secure your digital assets with the world's most trusted hardware wallet. This guide will walk you through every step of the setup process.

Trezor Hardware Wallet

What is Trezor?

Trezor is the original hardware wallet, a physical device designed to store your private keys offline. In the world of cryptocurrency, "not your keys, not your coins" is a golden rule. Unlike software wallets (often called "hot wallets") that are connected to the internet and vulnerable to hacks, malware, and phishing attacks, Trezor keeps your sensitive data isolated in a secure environment known as "cold storage".

This means that even if your computer is compromised by a virus, your funds remain safe because the private keys never leave the Trezor device. Transactions are signed internally on the device and only the signed result is sent back to your computer to be broadcast to the network.

Bank-Grade Security

Your private keys are stored in a secure element, protected from physical and digital attacks.

Why Choose Trezor?

Industry-leading security features that give you peace of mind.

Offline Storage

Your keys never touch the internet, making them immune to remote hacks and malware.

Open Source

Transparent security that is audited by security experts worldwide. No hidden backdoors.

Easy Recovery

Recover your entire wallet on any compatible device using your personal recovery seed.

Setting Up Your Device

Follow these steps to initialize your new Trezor wallet.

1

Unboxing & Inspection

Before you begin, carefully inspect the package. The box should be sealed with a tamper-evident hologram. If the hologram looks damaged, peeled, or if the box appears to have been opened, do not use the device. Contact Trezor support immediately. Your package should contain the device, a USB cable, a lanyard, and recovery seed cards.

2

Install Trezor Suite

To communicate with your device, you need the Trezor Suite interface. Download it directly from the official website (trezor.io/trezor-suite). Avoid third-party links or unofficial app stores. Trezor Suite is your command center for managing your portfolio, sending transactions, and buying crypto securely.

3

Connect & Update

Connect your Trezor to your computer using the provided USB cable. The device screen should light up. Follow the on-screen instructions in Trezor Suite. You will likely be asked to install the latest firmware. This is a crucial security step to ensure your device has the latest features and security patches. Always verify the firmware fingerprint on your device screen.

4

Create Wallet & Backup

Select 'Create new wallet'. Your device will generate a unique set of private keys. Then comes the most important step: The Backup.

CRITICAL SECURITY WARNING:

Your Trezor will display a sequence of words (12 or 24). This is your Recovery Seed. Write these words down on the provided cards in the exact order shown. NEVER take a photo, NEVER type them into a computer, and NEVER store them in the cloud.

If your device is lost, damaged, or stolen, this seed is the ONLY way to recover your funds. Anyone with this seed can access your wallet. Treat it like cash.

5

Set a PIN

Set a strong PIN code to protect your device from unauthorized physical access. You will need to enter this PIN every time you connect your Trezor to a computer. The PIN entry method on Trezor is designed to be secure even if your computer has a keylogger.
